Massage Envy Corporate Video - Stage 1

This week my team and I started the first stage of the corporate video shoot for Massage Envy Spa. Massage Envy Spa is the pioneer and national leader of affordable massage and spa services. Over a decade ago, Massage Envy Spa was launched to create a completely new category in the wellness industry. Today, we shot eight testimonials from long-time customers to begin pre-production of the event. The testimonials will be played during the event in a few weeks, therefore needing to film them ahead of time. We used two cameras to get different angles and a simple three-point lighting setup.

GradWeek 2015 Video Shoot in Bahamas

I recently was in the Bahamas for a one week video shoot! The vacation event was for Grad Week, students who just graduated from high school. The video shoot included shots of them getting to the hotels, to all of their special events such as beach parties, nightclub parties and cruises, and of them finally leaving home. This was my first opportunity to use my DJi Ronin-M, which I was extremely impressed with but still have a lot of learning to do with it. My Lumix GH4 worked nicely with it because it was not that heavy, however the only negative was I did not have a monitor so I could not visually see what I was shooting at time. Also unfortunately, this trip I damaged my Phantom Vision 2 Plus Drone due to some circumstances and was unable to use it for most of the trip. Even the trip came out to be costly with losing my drone, it was still a successful video shoot and the video will be out shortly!

Real Estate Video Listing

I feel that one of the new trends in real estate industry that separates you from other agents is utilizing video in marketing your properties. This shoot for a real estate agent was my first for this type of field. It was a beautiful home in a nice Las Vegas neighborhood, fully furnished with a comforting backyard. The equipment I used was Lumix GH4 camera with a slider and DJi Phantom Vision 2 Plus for the aerial shots.

Pleasure Pool Memorial Day Weekend Las Vegas 2015

It was another crazy weekend again here in Las Vegas for Memorial Day Weekend 2015. I had the chance again work with Ultra DJs at their event at the Pleasure Pool at Planet Hollywood. The Pleasure Pool recently renovated with more cabanas, upgraded sound system, bar, and the Strip's first ever FlowRider Wave-in-a-Box Double, which allows riders variety of board-sport skills – surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, skimboarding, skateboarding. Among the entertainment, we had DJs Shai Perri and Roger Gangi spinning beats, and live performances by Lydia Ansel on the violin and Rocco on the saxaphone. Besides enjoying all the entertainment, some party-goers were able to participate in a bikini contest as well! I tried to use the drone for some aerial shots, however I could not get a strong enough GPS signal to safely use it. I was still able to get enough shots with my Lumix GH4 camera and mounting a GoPro in various places of the pool. Though the weather was not great, everyone still had a great time.

Drone Operator for Lynch Mob Music Video 'Testify'

In a ghost town in Nelson, Nevada, I had the opportunity to work with the rock legend George Lynch. George Lynch is an American hard rock guitarist and songwriter. Lynch is best known for his work with heavy metal band Dokken and his band Lynch Mob. Lynch is considered to be one of the most influential and famous 80's metal guitarists (Wikipedia). I was the drone operator for the official music video of 'Testify,' where we had some major challenges due to the weather, equipment and car problems. Location was incredible, it has been the location for many past music videos from many major artists in the industry. One of my primary shots with the drone was George peeling out of gas station onto the main road, however his first take was our last take because he ended up blowing his transmission. The car was the most important prop for the music video, so we had to think creatively on how to already use the shots we had with the car to the car now not being available. It was a fun and challenging experience.

Watch the Diplo Interview

A superstar DJ, sought-after producer, taste-making label owner, and wizard behind Major Lazer, Diplo (aka Diplodocus, Wes Diplo, and Wes Gully) launched his career on the fringes of dance music. With his mash-up mixtapes, he found and created a sound where his musical tastes -- '80s pop, electronica, Dirty South hip-hop, and his major influence, Miami bass music -- intersect. Diplo Interview

This interview I filmed for 98.5KLUC in Las Vegas featured DJ/producer Diplo. Diplo was in studio to talk about new and upcoming projects and events and answer questions from some lucky fans. For the interview we used five cameras to get different angles on Diplo, the interviewer and the fans. Also, we had two LED light panels to get the right exposure and not push our ISO. The interview went well and as soon as it was over, he was nice enough to sign autographs and take pictures with fans even though he had to catch a flight to DJ at Coachella the same day.

Celebrity Cars Las Vegas Opening

On Monday March 23rd, the grand opening of Celebrity Cars Las Vegas was an amazing event I was lucky enough to film. The showroom was filled with cars such as Ferrari's, Porsche's, and many other classic vehicles and choppers. There were models, food vendors, bikini contest, DJs, and an open bar available for all the attendees. On of my main focus was to get nice shots of the cars, so I utilized a slide and had smooth dolly movements on the some close-up shots. In this particular shot I was getting a close-up of the Ferrari logo and dollied right to reveal the 'Celebrity Cars Las Vegas' logo. The shot came out great. Other coverage I wanted to get was the crowd, as well as small groups just enjoying themselves and having a great time. The DJ was also a target, however it was a little more difficult because he was about 20 feet up in a DJ booth. Also, some more great footage I got was from the bikini contest, the women were beautiful and they did a great job modeling the bikini's from one of the sponsors. This was my first car show shoot and I really enjoyed it!

Memorial Day 2014 - Pleasure Pool @ Planet Hollywood

On Memorial Day 2014 I had the opportunity to do a promotional video for the Planet Hollywood's 21 and over 'The Pleasure Pool.' There were five DJs rocking the party that day, including a live sax performer named Natty Rico who did an amazing job playing the sax in key with the music. A bonus was the bikini contest, where there were about twenty beautiful ladies who competed and had a fun time. In this particular shot I was using a Canon T4i camera with a Canon EF 8-15MM fisheye lens, and a Rode Stereo VideoMic with a windscreen on it because it was windy that day. It is always difficult to shoot on a sunny day without a neutral density filter because it usually overexposes the background. Another challenge was maneuvering through the crowd. Overall, it was a fun experience and I edited the raw footage in Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

Behind The Scenes 'Cancun X' Music Video

I was in Cancun for four days to film the exclusive music video of "Cancun X" from the Club Killers artist. The setting was perfect for the genre of the music, basically a party song with good energy to make people dance. We had several actors and models in the shoot. The first day we shot at the pool of the hotel we were staying at which was perfect for what we wanted to shoot, and we also were able utilize the drone as well. On the second day we filmed at the ultimate nightclub Dady O's, and a memorable moment was when the Aztec had an amazing performance. The third day we shot at Mandala Beach, which is Cancun's biggest pool party where we had four models with our main actor. The fourth day we shot on the amazing beach, which had clear blue water, and where we had our actors also ride on the wave runners. The shots were great because we used the drone to follow the actors on the wave runners. However, this is only half of the video we completed, we still have to go to Los Angeles for the final shots before we can edit and release "Cancun X."

Say Goodbye Short Film

This is behind the scenes of the short film 'Say Goodbye' that I directed for Short Media Production class. This film was about two women who play with a Ouija board and one of them gets haunted and killed at the end by a ghost. I had to make sure my two actresses were comfortable with using a real Ouija board because some people are just freaked about what can happen if you do play with it and it responds. Luckily, my two actresses thought it would be fun and they were actually asking it questions, however nothing happened and they just physically moved the planchette themselves when filming. In this particular shot, I wanted my actress' hair to move like it was being brushed by a ghost so I decided to use a blow dryer to make it happen. I knew I would have to re-record the dialogue and audio so the sound of the blow dryer was not an issue. The equipment I used was a Lumix GH4 4K camera, several different lenses, LED light panels, tripod, glidecam, and a crane jib. It took us a total of 8 hours to shoot the whole film, and I learned a lot after I edited the whole project. There were a lot of things I could have done better, some of the shots could have been improved with better framing. I definitely want to re-shoot it with the same actresses.

Club Killers Apparel Commercial

This was an exciting shoot for me because I got to film a commercial on my own company's product for Advertising Production class. Club Killers is a company that focuses on DJs and anyone who generally loves music, through music and video production, as well as through clothing. This particular commercial was for our clothing brand. The talent was my friend DJ Earwaxxx, who DJs many clubs around the strip. We filmed it in the video room at The Art Institute of Las Vegas, utilizing the green screen. The equipment I used for this shoot was the Lumix GH4 4K camera, a crane jib, a tripod, and some Arri lights to evenly light the green screen, as well as my subject. The most difficult part of the shoot was lighting the green screen evenly with the amount of lights we had, because we also needed to shoot his whole body from head to toe. We did a lot of multiple takes - wide, medium, and closeups with the different outfits on. It took us about three hours for the entire shoot and I feel the final product came out very well. But, if I were to do it again I would tried directing him a little better with his actions and have taken a lot more wide shots of him.

Dash Berlin Interview

Last week I was given the opportunity to film an interview with DJ Jeffrey Sutorius, the front man of the DJ/production group Dash Berlin. They are based from the Netherlands and have had many breakthrough and award-winning songs on the trance charts. Jeffrey was in town to headline an event at Marquee Nightclub, and he was nice to enough to come into the 98.5 KLUC studio to give a few lucky fans an exclusive one-hour interview where they were able to ask him questions too. I used four DSLR cameras for the interview, three on tripods and one hand-held. One of the camera was a medium shot on the interviewee DJ CO-1, the second was a medium shot on Jeffrey, the third was a wide 2-shot, and the fourth one was hand-held to give the interview a different feeling than just static shots. The studio already had some good lighting, however we setup two LED panels to brighten it up a little more. We recorded the audio of DJ CO-1 and Jeffrey directly into a computer using Adobe Audition from a Shure SM-58LC microphone. Audio came out excellent, except for when some of the fans asked questions because we did not have a wireless microphone to mic them. This was my first time shooting an interview that was almost like a press conference, so it was a good learning experience with maneuvering through the crowd and putting the cameras in the right position to not have them in the way of the fans. I also had to use zoom lenses on all the cameras since there was some distance from me to the subjects. Jeffrey is a humble and talented character, even at the end of the interview he took pictures with all the fans, signed autographs, and gave away free tickets to the few lucky fans who got to be there.

Drone Shot for Luwee13's 'Peek-A-Boo' Music Video Shoot

On a very early morning, like 3AM type morning, the crew woke up to shoot Luwee13's music video on the top of a mountain. Our director wanted to get the sunrise to get the perfect light from the sun, but we did not anticipate the sunrise to be about an hour and a half later then we expected. So while we waited, the crew pretty much caught our breath after a rough hike up the hill and carrying all the equipment. When the sun came up over into the valley, I have to say it was a beautiful sight to see. We knew we were only going to have the sunrise for a short period of time so I had to quickly get the DJi Phantom Vision Plus (drone) up in the air and try to get a few aerial shots. The weather conditions were great, it was not windy so I was able to control the Phantom. The difficulty with the Phantom is that the camera attached to the unit is only a fish-eye lens, therefore it is difficult to get everybody out of the shot because it is so wide of an angle. The director had to get everybody to hide behind big rocks so they would not be in the shot, but it was also hard for me to not get in the shot as well without seeing physically where the Phantom was flying. After getting the shots we wanted, it was a little difficult to land the Phantom because there was not a real flat surface for it to safely land on, however after a few tries I was able to land it. This location was amazing and I plan on filming there again in the near future.

"Rabbit Hole" Dialogue Project

The "Rabbit Hole" dialogue project was manifested through my Acting and Directing class. I was fortunate to have two great actors in directing and filming this scene. The equipment I used was Lumix GH4 4K camera, three LED light panels, and a Rode NTG-2 shotgun microphone. Unfortunately, sound was my biggest obstacle because we were recording right next to a refrigerator, but I was planning to do re-recording of dialogue anyways so it was not too big of an issue. My two actors, Aaron and Katie did an amazing job because they both memorized the whole script so we were able to make this a quick shoot. We did a wide shot, medium shot, medium close-up on each character, and close-up on each character. After those shots, we did several cutaways and cut-ins. There was not much action in this so the actors really had to put a lot of emotion in it to give the scene a touching impact. I purposely made the set design messy and disorganized because that tells the story of the character's relationship. During the final edit, I did some color correction to make the mood more cold and dark.

Aveeno Commercial

This thirty-second 'Aveeno' commercial was my first directing assignment done for Acting and Directing class. I was lucky enough to direct and film this at a friend's house in Southern Highlands where it was the perfect setting for a sunscreen commercial. I did not use any lights for this shoot because it was outside, and I was using a Lumix GH4 4K camera with a 50MM and 24-135MM lens with variable ND filters on both of them. In this particular medium close-up shot, she was slowly walking towards me while I was walking backwards and using a glide cam. The sun was out that day, however the it was really windy that day so it gave me some complications with the microphone and my actress' hair was blowing everywhere. I used a windscreen on the microphone but the wind could still be heard in the recording. Also, I wanted to use my DJI Phantom II Vision Plus (Drone) but when I flew it, the weather conditions could not allow me to get a nice steady shot above her. Another issue I did not realize was that there was a huge mountain in the neighborhood of the house I was filming at, so the sun came down a lot earlier then I had expected. Besides the handling of the camera, it was also a good learning experience in directing because the purpose of this assignment for class was to direct talent. It was a lot more difficult then I had expected even after all the pre-production work because sometimes it is hard to explain the vision that is in your mind. Overall, it was a fun and great experience in directing.

The "DJ Earwaxxx" Documentary

This picture was taken from the making of the documentary "DJ Earwaxxx" at the "House of Waxxx." Charleston Perez aka DJ Earwaxxx is a Las Vegas DJ, originally from Southern California. He has been a DJ for over twenty years and came to Las Vegas about seven years ago to fulfill his dreams to become an elite DJ in Las Vegas. This documentary interviews DJ Earwaxxx, as well as many of his other DJ friends, and they discuss the struggles and successes in his journey in becoming one of Las Vegas' most talented DJs.

The "DJ Earwaxxx" documentary is a long-term shoot because I am trying to show the story from a lot of b-roll footage throughout a period of time, maybe 2-3 years. Specifically in this shot of him showcasing a performance, I am using a Panasonic Lumix GH4 4K camera on a glide-cam, as well as a Canon T4i on a tripod and slide. There are three LED panel lights, and for sound I am using a Rode NTG-2 shotgun microphone on a boom pole. The set design was excellent, perfect for the scene I was trying to shoot and the lighting was also great, allowing me to set a low ISO for no noise. The only difficult part of the shoot was being able to move around a lot with the glide-cam because there just was not a lot of room to get the angles and shots I hoped for. However, overall it came out nicely!

Steve Aoki Interview

Steve Aoki is a talented DJ that travels all around the world DJing at big nightclubs and festivals. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to shoot an interview with him as well as working with the crew from 98.5 KLUC Las Vegas. We filmed this at his suite at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas right before he had to DJ at Hakkasan Nightclub. We used three cameras - one on our interviewee Steve; one on our interviewers DJ CO1 and Yung Jon Que; and another doing a wide-shot of all of them. We had four big LED light panels that filled the room nicely, which allowed us to lower our ISO all the way to 200 to reduce the grain. It took us about fifteen minutes to smoothly setup everything and the interview was great. All of the cameras were on tripods making them all static shots in the final edit. The full interview was over ten minutes, however we cut it to about five minutes with some b-roll of his previous performances from different venues. It took me about three hours to cut the full interview with some added color correction to make it look a little more cinematic. Steve is incredibly talented and has a great sense of humor, if you ever have the opportunity to see him perform, it will be an experience you will never forget!
